INFORMATION ON THE MODEL:
In order to promote the renewal of the wagon fleets and the standardization of freight wagons on the European state railways, the UIC (Union Internationale de Chemins de Fer) designed two variants for an open freight wagon at the beginning of the 1950s. The UIC Type I and UIC Type II. The UIC Type II was very much based on German pre-war developments with its dimensions of 10.0 m long and 5.4 m wheelbase. The entire frame and car body were completely welded. With the completion of the detailed construction, the Deutsche Bundesbahn in the Aw Kaiserslautern began to renew its O-car fleet based on the UIC Type II. Within two years, starting in 1954, 10,589 Omm54 cars were built in Kaiserslautern. Even though these were officially conversions from usable parts of older cars, almost exclusively new material was used for the cars. Only for the brake components were Kkg brakes from the donor cars used. In the following construction lots, which were referred to as Omm55, this was dispensed with and new KE brakes were installed. The DB also procured over 17,300 of these from 1955 onwards. Thanks to many detailed improvements during ongoing production and later design changes, the vehicles were maintained throughout their life cycle and were ultimately only completely phased out in 1994.
In addition to the Deutsche Bundesbahn, other state railways also purchased wagons according to the UIC Type II specifications for their fleet. For example, the DR Ost, SNCF, SNCB, FS, MAV, ÖBB, SBB, CSD, DSB etc. have been hired, some of which differ in country-specific details or assemblies.
